Project: Pipe Fabrication Plant
Collection of crane rail and load bearing column images and actionable information to support site renovations for continued safe manufacturing operations
Project Background
The pipe manufacturing facility was built in the early 1900's, and the facility owner wanted some survey and measurement work done to determine any need for renovations. The facility remained active during our measurement data collection. Our team collected 300,000 square feet of the site, 20,000 of those square feet being the main area of interest.
Problem
The pipe manufacturing company uses two 10 ton portal cranes that are critical to pipe production. The rails for the cranes had warped over time and the customer was in need of a survey of the rails and supporting structure to determine necessary renovation and mitigation strategies.
Approach
Our team rapidly collected a laser scan of the site to collect measurement information in under 45 minutes. Our approach allowed the pipe manufacturing facility to continue regular operations during our collection process. Traditional measurement collection methods would have required the facility to shut down during this time. We then created as-is 3D models of the full crane rail system as well as 3D models of the supporting steel columns. Within 3 days of the on-site scan, we delivered layered visuals showing the variance of the actual steel columns versus what an ideal steel column would be and visuals showing the crane rail deviation.
Benefits
With our team's fast delivery of actionable information, the customer was able to immediately see the severity of the crane rail misalignment. It was easy to see that the steel support columns were misaligned, twisted, and bent. The customer was able to quickly determine the severity of the situation to their ongoing operations as well as the safety issues this misalignment could cause, and they acted quickly to begin developing mitigation strategies and renovation plans.
Impact
- Risk to lost profits reduced due to regular pipe manufacturing operations continuing during our rapid on-site digital data capture
- Engineering and management decisions accelerated due to our delivery of actionable information within 3 days of measurement data collection
- Increase in safety to pipe manufacturing facility staff
