What is reality capture?
Reality capture is used to collect data of the built world in a digital format, including photos, LiDAR scans, and videos. Instead of using traditional, manual methods to record measurement data, different types of scanning and 360 video equipment can be used to capture complete and accurate digital data of a space in a much shorter amount of time with less effort. This data can be used by a variety of industries to plan construction and renovation projects, maintain important historical sites, perform climate change studies, and much more!
What are digital twins and why do they help?
Digital twins are virtual representations of physical assets, systems, and processes that are updated from real-time data. They offer several advantages, including:
Improved decision making: By having a digital representation of a physical asset, organizations can analyze data and simulate scenarios to make informed decisions about how to optimize operations.
Increased efficiency: Digital twins can help organizations streamline processes and improve overall efficiency by providing real-time data and insights into the performance of assets and systems.
Predictive maintenance: Digital twins can be used to monitor the health and performance of physical assets and predict when maintenance is required, reducing the likelihood of unscheduled downtime.
Better collaboration: Digital twins can facilitate collaboration between different departments and stakeholders by providing a shared, visual representation of physical assets and systems.
Improved safety: Digital twins can help organizations identify and mitigate potential safety hazards by simulating scenarios and providing real-time data and insights into the performance of physical assets and systems.

What industries are reality capture and digital twins used for?
Reality capture and digital twin technology is used across many different industries, most notably in the AEC industry (architecture, engineering, and construction) as well as the aerospace, automotive, transportation, energy, manufacturing, and security industries.
In what phase of my construction or renovation project is SiteScout360’s reality capture service most useful?
Our reality capture service is most useful during the project planning phase, but it is also beneficial throughout your project life cycle. During the project planning phase, our team can go on-site to capture current, as-is site conditions and measurements before building or renovation begins. Once your project is underway, our team can capture progress conditions and measurements at scheduled times throughout the project life cycle to help keep your project goals on track.
What is your Specification and Validation Report, and why do you provide it?
The Specification and Validation Report (or Spec and Val, as well call it) provides metrics on the project which include the time it took to scan and model the project site, verifiable site dimensions, and comparisons of the site scan versus the site model. It also provides data on floor area, structural volume, counts of site features, and site renderings. We provide this report after final deliverables have been provided as a summary of the work that was completed. Our customers appreciate this final report since it gives them a way to verify that data we provided was accurate and true to the project site. It’s also great to have on hand during project review meetings or any discussions related to the project!
How do you perform reality capture so quickly?
Many of our customers are amazed at how fast we are able to get quality, reliable deliverables completed! We use mobile LiDAR technology, which means instead of setting up tripod-based scanning equipment in different locations throughout your site, we are able to walk the entire site, continuously moving and collecting scan data as well as 360 video with our Fusion Reality Capture™ process.
How accurate is your reality capture data?
We find that for most architectural and engineering project needs, a half of an inch precision across a 10 meter square site is what is required, and that is what our team can provide! When it comes to modeling that data, we work with our customers to meet the Level Of Detail (LOD) requirements that their project demands.
What equipment do you use to perform your services?
We use a variety of scanning equipment, 360 cameras, and other technology to provide our services.
We even have our own, in-house made scanning rig and SiteScout360 team mascot, RollyRig!

What if I have questions about a model you delivered or if I have changes to a model?
You will have a dedicated Project Manager to reach out to throughout your project with us. Once we send you your deliverables for review, we always expect a follow up after that to discuss any final changes you may have. Once you get to the point where you have approved and accepted all deliverables, we are always available for follow up questions post-project!
How do I fit reality capture and 3D models into my company’s processes if I’ve never used them before?
The best way to do this is to first schedule a call with us! We can do a free consultation to understand your current processes, explain our services to you and your team, and figure out how we might work together. In most cases, it’s a matter of figuring out the best, most effective way to implement innovation that will create value for your organization with the least disruption to your team as possible. Keeping up with and adopting new technology is so important to all businesses, and our subject matter experts are here to help!
